Levittimes September 2006

A team of scholars from 5 Universities, 4 states,
tour Levittown,PA., for 3 days in June 2006.(Article Below)

On June 26th, 2006 Associate Professor Dianne Harris and her
team of professors toured Levittown, PA under the direction of S.
David Marable. Several sites were on the itinerary. The
first being the site where once stood the Levittown library
and the Levittown shopping Center. They were informed
that the same architect that designed the L.P.R.A. building
in Levittown PA designed the Levittown N.Y. version of the L.P.R.A.
What might have surprised them all was the original
library in Levittown, PA has the same front facades.
The high light of the tour was when they
visited Tullytown, PA and photographed the still standing original
Levittowners which such magazines as ‘Ladies Home Journal’ photographed
for their publications. Also surprising them was the fact
that two Elm trees planted by Levitt’s in Magnolia
Hill, PA represent their community built in Norfolk, Virginia.
The uniqueness pointed out was that it is named the Village
of Monticello. When looking at the back of a twenty
dollar bill you will notice two Elm trees. During
this visit they were shown two of the five
Sequoia trees that still flourish in Levittown, PA.Marable
having three growing on his property. The sequoia (red wood)
trees, were used to frame out each levitt built home
during the 1950's. They were cut in California and
shipped by rail from their lumber mill in Blue Lake
California. The day ended with a mini visit to Marable’s
home in Snowball Gate. They were also shown several
hundred pieces of memorabilia and artifacts. The group left
with a group photo and many thanks of appreciation.
